About the Greek Revival Style – By Dr. Christopher Cooper
The period of architecture we can loosely term Greek Revival, Neoclassical or Regency depending on your school of thought was popular from the 1820’s until about 1860, and had a major impact in Canada and the United States on public and commercial architecture, and a lesser, although still very significant, impact, on religious and domestic buildings. In many respects it is a natural continuation of the Georgian style which preceded it. The Regency period saw a great surge of interest in classical Greece, popularized by men like Lord Byron.
The Greek Revival Style arrived in North America around 1820. The Grecian and Roman details were rarely absent from American pattern books; the most popular books of the time were by Connecticut-born Asher Benjamin who wrote “The American Builder’s Companion” first published in 1827. This book instructed builders in every aspect of construction, including the development of geometry, carpentry, construction of sashes, frames, doors, and stairs; along with plans and elevations of domestic and other buildings.
